I recognized the unmet need of people who menstruate with diabetes - the need to understand the impact of periods on diabetes management. I founded the Tidepool Period Project to address that need. This ongoing project includes collecting the largest dataset of combined diabetes and menstruation data and the design of interfaces for both clinicians and patients that will integrate diabetes and menstrual cycle data into one platform. No data sets or product of this kind exists.

THE UNMET NEED

There is minimal and inconclusive research on the relationship between diabetes & menstruation, no clinical guidelines exist on this topic and type 1 diabetes places an additional risk and burden of care on persons who menstruate that can be reduced with new technologies, education & research.

PILOT PROJECT

We ran 15 discovery sessions, collected data from 85 persons with T1 diabetes who menstruate and interviewed 6 practicing endocrinologists. This research influenced the roadmap below to design solutions for patients, clinicians and researchers.

THE PRODUCT VISION

Collection of industry leading real-world menstruation and  diabetes data & the design of visualization tools to conduct retrospective data analysis, empower patients with more contextual diabetes data and support clinical care.

CLINICIAN ADVISORY BOARD

I established key relationships with leading endocrinologists, who have joined the Period Project Advisory Board to ensure credibility and accuracy is brought to all clinical and design decisions.

THE IMPACT

"....And while femtech is carving out a much-needed space within the medical technology industry, isolating and addressing women-exclusive conditions isn't the only way forward. Within the femtech space, retroactive consideration needs to be given to conditions that aren't specific to the biological female body, but that affect women's bodies differently. Considerations of male versus female management of a condition should be a requirement, not a supplemental add-on to the default care practices."
